Etobicoke Kitchen Renovation

Project Details

The Problem

A problem arose with this large mid-century two-storey home; there was no flow. The backyard, which was exquisitely landscaped, was not visible or a focal point and the house seemed to be separated by many walls.

There were two back-to-back powder rooms on the main floor (first time seeing this!). The house had a large separate family room, a main-floor office, and an infrequently used living room which was stacked but slightly cut off from a smaller dining room.

Additionally, near the entrance to the garage was a dated dark, and uninviting laundry room. Although the entryway had first to second-floor openness, it was dark and opened up to a dated curved set of stairs.

The Solution

We opened up the main floor entry as our focal point by adding new modern stairs, and a skylight, and widening the access point to the kitchen which allowed a view of the backyard.

We reframed the landing above the entry to provide space for a yoga studio and a second-floor lounge. We added main to second-floor bump-outs to the left and right of the front door.

We dramatically changed the use of both front rooms by changing the office into a gym and the old tired, dark, infrequently used living now became an inviting and spacious dining room.

At the back of the house, we enlarged the kitchen which includes an expansive island, a number of pantries, and a kitchen table.

The laundry was moved to the second floor and the old laundry room was turned into a fully functioning mudroom.

We created flow and rejuvenated the dated 1980ss home with a modern motif.
