The Problem
What started off as a quick phone call to give some advice lead to our process of asking, “How do you use your home? What are the pain points in your house? What limitations do you find with your house as it currently stands?”.
From our initial questions, we determined that the powder room was hard to access, the front of house family room was tight for people to sit comfortably, and the back kitchen was dated.
Moreover, the clients often entertain family and guests and needed a place for people to sit and enjoy the evening. We proposed that reconfiguring part of the main floor would solve a number of issues.
The Solution
We determined that adding an enlarged eat-in kitchen and a new one-storey family room would solve the majority of their issues. All kitchen cabinets were constructed from the floor to ceiling on three sides and a larger square island placed centrally.
The original family room would be turned into an office for both owners.
A new powder room was designed with a better layout and access via a pocket door. Millwork to display some of their collections and select pieces were needed in the family room.
In order to round out the gathering spot when they were entertaining or relaxing, a linear fireplace and television were added to the mix.
Finally, to allow for a separation of the two conjoined spaces, we raised the family room ceiling height to be much higher than the kitchen. This provided a feeling of airiness when one is in the family room, separation from the conjoined space was also accomplished.
